Rolling Stone magazine has published a new version of its famous list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, or the 500 best songs of all time. The top list of songs was ranked according to a jury composed of over 250 artists, musicians, producers, music critics and significant individuals from the music industry, and this time a total of about 4,000 songs entered the competition.
As number 1 of the 500 best songs, the song “Respect” by Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin was chosen.
The first version of this song was sung by the author Otis Redding, and two years later Aretha’s version was released in a new arrangement, which reversed gender roles and surpassed the original in popularity. The song was published in 1967 on her debut album “I Never Loved a Man the Way I Loved You”, and during the 70s this song became a kind of anthem of the movement for the struggle for civil rights and gender equality.
